I am a reasonable man. It is not as if I have charged you for your education, or clothes or our family holidays’ So they spend the next two weeks haggling over the various items e.g. ‘Purchase of picture postcard in Perigord, 1955’ and 'Buying pumpkin for Halloween celebrations, October 1965 - £1/5/6'. Each one is challenged - after all, dad had eaten his share of the pie and soup made after the pumpkin had been hollowed out. Each time an item is challenged they review the episode and the circumstances of the purchase. And each time dad ends up saying ‘I am not an unreasonable man. Have that one on me’, until there are just a few left. Eventually mum explains to her son what has been going on, ‘Your father worked extremely hard to produce that bill. It's very nice that you have spent so long revisiting your youth together.....you see this isn't really about money. It's about saying goodbye to each other.....Most people never find a way of saying goodbye and good luck at university….. ‘ This is a season of endings and farewells for children, parents and in many schools, staff too. Instead of a bill, many secondary schools give (or rather, sell) their leavers a ‘yearbook’ crammed full of photos and reminiscences. It’s good not just to have a memento to keep for the future, but to re-live the recent past whilst it’s still fresh and you can enjoy it again with the people who shared it with you. End of year services often have that flavour, as Y6 children share some of their school memories. Perhaps it’s not the final polished sentences that really count, but the conversations that went on as they decided what to say and they re-lived the highlights of their shared story. It’s a while since ‘It’s Your Life’ was on our screens and a lot longer since my infant daughter used to end each day, each one a new adventure, by asking ‘Can we speak my day?’ As we enter the home straight, I hope you get a chance in the days ahead to recount some of the highlights of each others’ time in school and recount how your ownstory’s unfolded. I hope you find a good way to say goodbye and share God’s blessings for whatever may lie ahead. Have a great summer!
